The Cubs had a couple of quality scoring opportunities in the first two innings, but managed just the one run they’d score on the night. They twice later had three batters reach in a given inning, but scored no runs because of double-play balls.
All in all, a decent night for Javier Assad, who was getting some ugly swings and misses on a beautiful curveball, and was generally locating his hard stuff well, too. He got into some trouble when he’d leave his cutter or Slider belt high, as they’re just not quite nasty enough pitches to play when they don’t have good location. Two of the runs charged to him scored after he’d departed (he allowed a couple singles in the 6th).
That 6th Inning was when things went off the rails, with Erich Uelmen totally unable to locate, and Christopher Morel’s throwing issues at third really biting the Cubs.
We got to see Jeremiah Estrada again tonight, and while the fastball looked better, he was still giving up some loud contact.
Full box score.
